Endocrine metabolic diseases based on mass spectrometry technology

Construction and popularization of precise detection platform

Prof. Qiu Ling’s team

Based on liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS) and other advanced mass spectrometry technologies with powerful analytical performance in the field of laboratory testing, this project is an innovative development from the perspective of clinical needs. It greatly expands the connotation of important biomarker tests for difficult and rare endocrine metabolic diseases in the field of laboratory testing, improves the accuracy of the tests, and provides strong technical support for the accurate diagnosis and treatment of many diseases, especially difficult and rare endocrine metabolic diseases. It provides strong technical support and plays a leading role in the development and application of mass spectrometry technology in the field of testing.

Relying on the National Clinical Key Specialty Construction Project, the Department of Laboratory Medicine of Peking Union Medical College Hospital has always been oriented to clinical needs, committed to the methodological transformation and application of new technologies, and utilized cutting-edge technologies for the benefit of patients. On the basis of the chromatography platform in the 1990s, the first LC-MS/MS was purchased in 2012, and the mass spectrometry platform was formally established. Subsequently, relying on the support of the National Clinical Research Special Project for High-level Hospitals, the National Key Research and Development Program, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, PUH has led the development of clinical mass spectrometry in China in the aspects of equipment configuration, talent training, technical capability, clinical services, and scientific research achievements.

Equipment Configuration

Currently, the mass spectrometry platform is equipped with more than ten different types of mass spectrometry instruments, including liquid tandem triple quadrupole mass spectrometry, liquid tandem high-resolution mass spectrometry, mass spectrometry imaging, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and so on. We always pay attention to the most cutting-edge mass spectrometry technology and configure the instruments with a developmental perspective to meet the clinical testing needs of different types of substances to be measured, including inorganic elements, small molecules, peptides, proteins, etc., and we are actively exploring the application of space mass spectrometry technology in the clinic and its translation.

Talent Cultivation

At present, there are 8 technicians working in the mass spectrometry platform; relying on the platform, we have trained 8 master’s and doctoral students and 2 postdoctoral fellows; we have held five consecutive national continuing education programs on mass spectrometry; and for the first time in China, we have opened a mass spectrometry course for postgraduate students of clinical diagnostic testing, which is titled “Application of Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry in Clinical Tests and New Progress”. In addition, every year, we provide relevant technical training and practice platform for many groups of trainees from many hospitals across the country, which plays an active role in promoting the application of mass spectrometry technology in clinical practice.

Research Achievements

At present, based on the platform and oriented by clinical needs, we focus on the problems of “inability to measure”, “inability to measure” and “low throughput”, and have conducted a lot of scientific research in the areas of mass spectrometry method development, automated pre-processing system research and development. We have carried out a lot of scientific research and clinical translation work in mass spectrometry method development, automated pre-processing system research and development. Currently, he has published 65 mass spectrometry-related articles (41 SCI) in Clinical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, CCLM, Journal of Chromatography B, Clinica Chimica Acta, Chinese Journal of Laboratory Medicine and other domestic and international authoritative journals. He has applied for more than 10 patents, 4 of which have been authorized and 2 of which have been transformed. He has won the second prize of Beijing Scientific and Technological Progress based on the promotion of mass spectrometry technology for clinical application.
